Sodium and potassium
Like chloride ions, sodium in lake water generally derives from seawater or pollution caused by human activity. Potassium, like nitrogen and phosphorus, is an element that can easily become depleted on land due to the growth of land plants. Marine plants, however, are not limited by potassium levels in their ability to produced nutrients through photosynthesis, as they are by nitrogen and phosphorus.
