Supreme Counsel Masao Horiba awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon

On May 22, the founder of HORIBA Co., Ltd. (currently the Supreme Counsel) was awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon (*1).

Supreme Counsel Horiba, who has been supporting educational activity over a number of years, acting as Chairperson of the "21st Century Education Contents Development Commission", in January became the first Director of the "Kyoto Prefecture Student City Finance Park", the Junior Achievement (*2) program established by renovating the Kyoto prefecture Shigeno Junior High School facility.

As the director to further support children through education, he has donated 30 million yen of his own money. The medal was given to honor this achievement.

The facility idea was proposed by Counsel Horiba to Kyoto prefecture. He believes it is critical to offer training to children and students to cultivate a positive and informed view of a career and work.

Outside of the United States, this is the world first trial to start 2 facilities at the same time:
1. the "Student City, learning program for 5th and 6th grade", and
2. the "Finance park, learning program for 7th and 8th grade".

Here at the facility, corporations contribute by opening a miniature store on the premises where children can learn the business structure of buying and selling products, and offering other services. The facility is attracting attention nationwide.

The Message from the Director, Masao Horiba:
"You Create the Future"
What a wonderful thing to live happily here on earth now.
Let's cherish this, and make our life fruitful, and rewarding.
Your future potential is infinite.
You have to choose which direction to pursue. Learn about social structure here at the city and find the career that best fits you.
I have full confidence that your experience in this city will provide you with important judgment criteria for the future.

*1 Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon
This medal is awarded to individuals who have made exceptionally generous financial contributions for the wellbeing of the public. Unlike other Medals of Honor given every Spring and Autumn, this is given whenever a recommendation by a relevant ministry or office is made in acknowledgment of an appropriate contribution.

*2 Junior Achievement
Established 1919 in the United States, this is the worlds largest not-for-profit organization sponsored by corporate and individual contributors, offering educational material and programs on entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy.

It is now an organization with 120 programs within the United States, and 96 programs worldwide.

Junior Achievement Japan was established in 1995 to provide students with “the ability to make judgments based on unbending determination” by offering the younger generation experience-based education to understand the importance of saving and economy, coupled with industry.
