How shiny is it?

Have you noticed that the floors have recently gotten shinier at convenience stores? The floors at department stores, convenience stores, and corporate offices are polished with wax. However, it is not an easy job. Even if employees try to polish as hard as they can, the floor doesn't always become shiny. Or, perhaps sometimes the people who polish a floor might think it is shiny enough, but it still does not satisfy the owner of the building.

To solve those problems, a device was introduced to measure how shiny things are. It is quite a simple mechanism. Light is aimed at the floor and a sensor catches its reflections. If a reflection is perfect, the floor gets a full score. Even though this mechanism is quite simple, the device utilizes very sophisticated optical technologies. Efficiency can be improved, since employees can check shininess displayed by numbers, and do not have to waste time polishing a floor that is shiny enough.

This wonderful device is good not only for polishing floors, but also for car body coating or furniture surface quality inspections. It is also used in the paper industry to check the smoothness of high-end papers. There may be even other things around you for which this device can be used.
